Small Group Size
We limit the group size because we want to ensure that our teachers are able to individualize their instruction and provide the highest quality of care.
Low, Accessible Shelves with Age Appropriate Toys Within Reach
Classrooms are designed for children to explore and make choices about their play. We make sure children have access to a wide variety of fun and educational toys.
Beginning Interest Centers
Our room is divided into separate learning zones that allow children to begin turn-taking and more complex forms of play. These centers encourage different types of learning as children explore and learn to play independently or in small groups. Toddlers have the opportunity to explore the following learning centers as part of their daily Enriching Play: Blocks and Building, Language and Books, Fine Motor and Manipulatives, Music, Dramatic Play and Creative Arts. Our teachers also create a variety of props and learning games to enhance toddler’s learning and engage their curiosity and imagination. As toddlers are learning to share and play together, we provide duplicates of favorite toys to encourage important negotiations and limit the frustration of young toddlers. We create the perfect mix between quiet and active times, large and small group learning, child initiated activities and teacher facilitated activities to create a day full of learning and fun!
Literacy
Toddlers learn language naturally by hearing it used in context. They learn vocabulary by being spoken to, listened to and then encouraged to communicate their thoughts. They also discover the connection between spoken and written words by observing and experiencing them being used in the classroom.
Enrichment
Our teachers facilitate toddlers’ learning by creating a variety of props and learning games to engage toddlers’ curiosity and imagination. Toddlers are just beginning to engage in pretend play and we plan engaging opportunities to inspire their play. The environment we provide is full of activities perfect for toddlers. It allows them to discover and play independently or with others.
Creative Art
Art for toddlers is all in the exploring of art materials, not in the products they create. Teachers encourage their little artists to use their senses to experience the process of art. We provide a variety of activities that include the following: painting, stamping, scribbling, smearing, gluing, sticking etc.
Imagining Together
Every day we make time to gather and share stories. Being together allows us to get to know our friends and play learning games. During this time, we also sing and dance as we learn new songs and listen to music.
Meals & Snacks
Toddlers are introduced to nutritious foods for daily meals and snacks. We help toddlers develop independence and good eating habits.
Quiet Time
After lunch, toddlers enjoy a calm atmosphere with soft, dim lighting and a cuddly blanket. Children rest on individual, assigned rest mats. While some doze off and nap for a time, others may enjoy a good book or a quiet activity. We work with families to coordinate this important routine for their child.

What if building the good life starts long before you're old enough to even know what that means?
Our founder, Wyatt Graves, believes it does.
Fundamentals was never meant to simply be a place where children spend the day while their parents work. The vision was to create an early learning center -- a place where the years before kindergarten are treated like the incredibly important years they are.
Because children are already learning.
They're learning how to communicate. How to solve problems. How to make friends. How to follow directions, handle big feelings, become more independent and discover what they're capable of.
The foundation is being built whether we're intentional about it or not.
Wyatt talks a lot today about building the good life -- surrounding yourself with the right people, continuing to grow, serving others and creating a life you're proud of.

They were the very first baby class at Fundamentals... then they came back dressed for their freshman homecoming ❤️
(And, yes, they are banging on the door to be let back in in one of the pictures 😂)
These girls started at Fundamentals as babies the day we opened our doors in 2013. They grew up here together, became some of each other's very first best friends, and all these years later, they're still friends.
When it was time to take pictures for their freshman homecoming, they came back to where their story together started.
MJ's mom, Katrina Ward, shared this with us:
“Fundamentals will always hold such a special place in our hearts. It was so much more than the place I trusted with my baby girl, MJ, it became part of our village.
The staff loved my baby. They truly knew her, her personality, her moods, what made her smile, and even when she just wasn’t having a good day. They knew when she needed a little extra love, a different approach, or simply someone who understood how to refocus her and help turn her day around.
And Fundamentals gave her something else that has lasted far beyond her time there: some of her very first best friends. These girls started out as babies growing up together, and all these years later, that friendship continues.
Fundamentals helped raise our babies. They loved them, taught them, redirected them, celebrated them, and gave them a place where they belonged.
It really does take a village and I will forever be grateful that Fundamentals was part of ours.”
As we celebrate 25 years since Wyatt first stepped into childcare, these are the stories that put those years into perspective.
You can count years.
You can count classrooms.
You can count how many children have walked through the doors.
But then the first babies you cared for show back up as high school freshmen, still best friends, suddenly you can SEE what all those years mean.

13 years ago TODAY, Mrs. Elaine joined the family. ❤️
But by then, she had already spent 30 YEARS cooking at LSU.
After retiring at 50, Mrs. Elaine took nine months off before spotting an ad in the newspaper looking for a cook. She called, interviewed with Wyatt on a Wednesday, and he asked her if she could start the next day.
She told him no 😂
But she DID start the following Monday -- and 13 years later, she's still here.
For more than a decade, Mrs. Elaine has been the woman behind countless breakfasts, lunches and snacks for our Fundamentals kids. And somehow, after cooking all day at work, she still goes home and cooks for her own family. Every Sunday, she invites everyone over and cooks for them, too.
Apparently, some people really are just born to feed people ❤️
Mrs. Elaine has been here through so many children, families, teachers and changes over the years, and she's become part of the fabric of Fundamentals.
And eventually, she says she IS going to hang up the apron. She and her husband have plans to travel when they're both retired.
When asked where they're going, her answer was very Mrs. Elaine “We are just going to throw a dart at the map!”
After 13 years with Wyatt -- and 30 years at LSU before that -- we'd say she's earned quite a few darts.
